March 18, 2019 by brady anderson

Crawl spaces and attics are great. They provide access to plumbing and drain pipes, ductwork, electrical wiring, and more. However, if you are like most homeowners, you don’t give much thought or consideration to these areas unless something has gone wrong. After all – out of sight, out of mind.

Unfortunately, this is the attitude that could result in big issues down the road. The good news is, you can take control and inspect these areas to ensure no issues are present. “Spring cleaning” time is a great occasion to make sure you don’t take the condition of these spaces for granted.

The Importance of DIY Attic and Crawl Space Inspections

If you ignore the crawl space and attic in your home, all types of issues may occur, leading to you having to pay for even more expensive repairs in the future. While most people aren’t going to look forward to having to get in these dark, dank and dusty areas, it’s worth it in the long run.

Neglected attics and crawl spaces can result in problems inside the home. You may begin to notice an increase in humidity and dampness. You may also begin to see signs of mice and bugs in the cupboards, and  notice that your floors feel “squishy” and “soggy”, along with issues with mildew and mold.

Even worse, you may begin to notice your utility costs significantly increase.

Tips for a DIY Inspection

If you want to ensure you catch any would-be problems with your attic and crawl space use the following tips:

  • Look for any signs of moisture
  • Look for any signs of standing or pooling water
  • Verify that the insulation beneath the subfloor is not damaged and still in place
  • Look for any signs of rodent or insect activity
  • Inspect all exposed pipes and electrical wiring
  • Look for gaps and openings near the exterior walls

If you do notice any of these issues, don’t turn a blind eye. This will only  lead to even more problems.

Calling in the Professionals

If you detect any of the above issues, it’s a good idea to call our team at Hausmeister for a complete and thorough inspection. As mentioned before, it’s never a good idea to put off having these issues repaired as they are only going to get worse as time passes. Our team can help ensure your attic and crawlspace is problem free and that any issues are fixed in a timely manner.
